•  Ease of use: Practice putting on and taking off the pack. Make sure it has a support stand, so you can prop it on a table while you get in and out of it. The stand should lock firmly and be stable enough to keep your child from tipping over too easily. Some models have stands that automatically kick out when you take your arms out of the pack. Check to see that all the straps are easily adjustable to fit the body of other adults who may be toting your child. If it’s too cumbersome to change, you’ll want to choose another pack, or buy one for each of you.

There are a few downsides to backpacks: It’s hard to remove a sleeping child from one without waking him. And you can’t really see your little one very well when he’s in a pack. (Some children have been known to swipe things off grocery shelves.) Backpacks can also be a bit cumbersome to put on and take off when you’re on your own. Most parents find them worth the practice, though.

Although backpack manufacturers say you can haul your child in a pack until he weighs as much as 40 pounds, unless you’re an athlete in training, you probably won’t want to. Many parents roll out the strollers when their children get that that heavy.
